Frequently Asked Questions

XtraMetal has been in building product manufacturing for 32 years and we have encountered all kinds of problems, here are the most important concerns of our customers before closing the deal.

What is the best finish for a Vertical Batten Cladding project aiming for long-term color stability?

For maximum long-term color stability and durability, a PVDF (Fluorocarbon) coating is the superior choice. Vertical facades are often subject to prolonged and direct UV exposure, which can cause lesser coatings to fade or chalk over time. PVDF coatings are specifically formulated with high-performance resins that provide exceptional resistance to UV degradation, humidity, and atmospheric pollutants. This ensures excellent color and gloss retention for decades, making it the recommended finish for landmark projects where long-term aesthetic performance is critical.

Can Vertical Batten Cladding be curved or installed on rounded walls?

While the individual battens themselves are rigid linear profiles, they can be installed on a curved substrate to create a faceted or segmented curve effect. The appearance of a smooth curve depends on the radius of the wall and the width of the batten profiles being used. For a large-radius curve, the segmentation can be very subtle and appear visually smooth from a distance. For tighter curves, the faceted effect will be more pronounced. We can provide project-specific advice on the best profile and installation method to achieve the desired architectural intent on curved surfaces.

What is Vertical Batten Cladding?

Vertical Batten Cladding is an architectural design choice where cladding profiles are installed in an upright orientation. This system uses a series of battens—long, linear panels—to create a facade with strong vertical lines. It is popularly used to make buildings appear taller, more slender, and to achieve a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

Why is aluminum a good material for this application?

Aluminum is an excellent choice because it is lightweight, strong, and exceptionally durable. Its light weight makes it easy to handle and install, especially at height. Aluminum is naturally resistant to corrosion and, when coated with a high-performance finish, it can withstand harsh weather without warping, rotting, or degrading like traditional wood. It is also non-combustible, adding a layer of fire safety.

Does vertical installation affect the cost compared to horizontal?

The material cost is the same regardless of orientation. However, installation labor might vary slightly. Vertical installation requires a horizontal substructure, and careful planning is needed to ensure everything is level and plumb. While the click-system simplifies the process, the setup of the substructure is critical and may influence labor time depending on the complexity of the project.
