Frequently Asked Questions

XtraMetal has been in building product manufacturing for 32 years and we have encountered all kinds of problems, here are the most important concerns of our customers before closing the deal.

How do XtraMetal's privacy slats affect the wind load on an existing aluminum fence?

Installing our privacy slats will increase the solid surface area of your fence, which in turn increases the wind load it must withstand. For this reason, a structural assessment is critical. We recommend consulting with an engineer to ensure the existing fence posts and their footings are adequately specified to handle the additional force, especially in regions prone to high winds. The design of our aluminum slats is optimized for strength, but the integrity of the entire fence system relies on the strength of its foundation and framework.

What are the material specifications and available surface treatments for these privacy slats?

Our privacy slats are extruded from high-strength 6063-T5 aluminum alloy, known for its excellent durability and corrosion resistance. The standard surface treatment is a polyester powder coating, which provides a durable, uniform finish that resists chipping, scratching, and UV degradation. For projects in more demanding environments, such as coastal areas, we offer a superior fluorocarbon (PVDF) coating. This provides enhanced protection against salt spray, humidity, and chemical exposure, ensuring maximum color and gloss retention over the long term.

What is the installation process for retrofitting these slats onto an existing fence?

Installation is straightforward and designed for professional contractors.

Step 1: Preparation: Clean the existing fence pickets to ensure they are free of dirt and debris. Measure the height between the horizontal rails to confirm slat length; slats can be trimmed on-site if necessary.
Step 2: Slat Insertion: The slats are designed to be inserted vertically between the existing fence pickets. Depending on the specific design, they may snap-fit onto the pickets or slide into place.
Step 3: Securing: Once in position, locking mechanisms or fasteners at the top and bottom rails may be used to secure the slats and prevent movement or rattling.
Precautions: Always use appropriate personal protective equipment. Ensure that retrofitting slats does not void the warranty of the original fence manufacturer.

Can the privacy slats be customized in terms of size and color for specific projects?

Yes, XtraMetal offers customization to meet project requirements. While we provide standard heights and widths designed to fit common ornamental fence picket spacing (e.g., for 5/8″, 3/4″, and 1″ pickets), we can manufacture custom lengths for non-standard fence heights. Our powder coating process allows for a wide array of color options beyond standard black, white, and bronze. We can match custom RAL colors to align with specific architectural designs or corporate branding guidelines, ensuring a cohesive and professional appearance for your project.

Can the slats be painted a different color later?

While our factory-applied powder coating is designed to last for many years, it is possible to paint the slats. However, this requires specific preparation. The surface must be properly cleaned, scuffed (sanded), and primed with a product suitable for aluminum before applying a high-quality exterior-grade paint. We recommend consulting a professional painter for best results, as improper preparation can lead to peeling and chipping.
