What is the difference between a batten and a purlin?

Table of Contents

Battens and purlins are structural components in roofing/wall systems but serve distinct roles. Battens are narrow, secondary supports (typically 25-50mm wide) that directly secure cladding/roofing materials (Por exemplo, metal sheets, tiles) to primary structures. Purlins are larger, horizontal load-bearing members (C/Z-sections, 100-300mm depth) spanning between primary frames (rafters/trusses) to distribute roof/wall loads.

While battens handle localized wind uplift and material fixation, purlins manage structural integrity across wider spans. At Xtra Metal Group, we engineer both components with precision—optimizing material grades (Por exemplo, Aluzinc, pre-coated steel) and profiles for project-specific loads, aesthetics, and durability, backed by 30+ years of global project expertise.

As an aluminum ceiling & facade manufacturing engineer, I spent years immersed in design and production for things like exterior walls and ceilings. Seeing the gap between technical specs and practical understanding sparked my desire to share my knowledge clearly and make engineering materials accessible to more people.
